Follica, Inc. is developing novel therapies for the treatment of conditions and disorders associated with the hair follicle, the “master” control center for the development and replenishment of human hair and skin. Treatments for conditions of the follicle, primarily hair loss, acne, and pigmentation issues takes up a huge place in the market.
Multiple forces are converging to create broad opportunities for new treatments of conditions of the follicle. In 2004 hair and acne investigators, including Follica advisors, published breakthrough work elucidating follicle biology. Existing treatments for follicle disorders like hair loss and acne have issues with efficacy, safety, or both, and the development of new treatments has not kept pace with this increased appetite for aesthetic treatment.
Technology licensed by Follica has been used to generate completely new hair follicles for the first time in normal adult mammals. Dr. George Cotsarelis and colleagues discovered that the skin has the ability to revert to a more primitive state as stem cells migrate to the affected area, thereby achieving a regenerative capacity not previously appreciated to occur in adults. Their researches proved that they were able to control the regenerative response, including the extent of new hair follicle formation. The new hair follicles functioned normally, cycled through the normal stages of hair growth and exhibited normal architecture, including a full complement of stem cells. Cotsarelis and colleagues showed that the induction of this primitive state triggered corresponding embryonic molecular pathways distinct from those active in corresponding cells in adult skin, opening up new treatment options not previously thought to have therapeutic benefit in normal adult skin.
